Carbon Footprint and Global Warming

carbonfootprint-footThe total set of greenhouse gases produced by a person, organization, building, event, or a product is called the ‘Carbon footprint’. Greenhouses gases are the various gases that reflect the infrared radiation which it absorbs from a particular environment. Methane, carbon dioxide, water vapor, nitrous oxide and ozone are the various greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere. While greenhouses gases have a major role in maintaining warmth on the earth and making it favorable to sustain life, its excess can give rise to several critical conditions like global warming etc.

The industrial revolution marked the use of fossil fuels and deforestation and led to the rise of greenhouse gases in the environment. The earliest use of fossil fuels and deforestation used for industrial purposes was evidenced in the book, Lord of the Rings the two towers where the wizard Saruman orders the orcs to clear the surrounding forest near Isengard while he quotes ‘The old world will burn in the fires of industry. Forests will fall. A new order will rise. We will drive the machine of war with the sword and the spear and the iron fist of the orc’. This aptly explains the environmental impact of the industries on the environment.

Reduce, reuse, recycle and refuse, was once popularized in the famous cartoon show ‘Captain Planet’ where the planeteers often gave messages on environmental protection and pollution control. The continuous rise in the earth’s climatic temperature remains a major threat to the population on earth. As evidenced in the movie Water World, where global warming led to the melting of the polar ice caps and leads to the rise in the earth’s water levels and the remaining human population being victims to sea pirates and lived on floating colonies. Unless we want to trade dirt for money, it is time that we become aware of the dangers of carbon footprint and global warming.
